Degree vs Job: NITI Aayog Flags Massive Education-Employment Gap | Plain Speak

India’s education-to-employment gap is back in focus after NITI Aayog flagged serious weaknesses in the link between conventional degrees and the job market.According to the latest reporting on NITI Aayog’s findings, graduate unemployment stands at 13%, significantly above the national unemployment rate of 3.2%. Among graduate women, the unemployment rate is reported at 20.4%. The report also highlights weak job linkages for generic degrees such as BA, B.Sc and B.Com, calling for greater alignment between education, skills and industry requirements.NITI Aayog has argued for a shift towards specialised, job-linked programmes, particularly in emerging sectors including green industries and electric vehicles, alongside stronger apprenticeship opportunities. Reporting on the findings says more than 90% of graduates are working in roles that do not align with their qualifications.A separate NITI Aayog report, “Reimagining Skilling for Viksit Bharat@2047,” published in August 2026, estimates that 8.7 crore Indians aged 15–29 were not in education, employment or training based on 2021 data.
